Another Vegas Expansion Mock Draft

2018-06-08

We have already seen one Mock Draft posted and as the deadline looms, about 48 hours from now, it's time to look at another.

When this draft was put together each position group was assessed and it was determined that the greatest strength was on defence and in net. The biggest and most glaring weakness appears to be at C as there are no real legitimate first line or second line centres available. Due to this, it was decided that the focus would be on securing the best wingers possible, unless the skill level of a defenceman vastly superceeded that selection. It was also determined that there wasn't a significant amount of young talents available, so, this mocker decided to try and make the team competitive in the here and now, while also being mindful to scoop-up a few young-ish players with a high ceiling, or once high ceiling :( .

Let's examine the greatest area of weakness first, the centre group. Of the 5 "centres" selected, only 3 are pure NHL centremen. Patrick Marleau is known for his versatility up front and due to a lack of significant pressence of a true #1 C, he finds himself leading the first line of the expansion Golden Knights. Marleau will certainly be considered grandpa to the team, but he brings a nice offensive element and will certainly lead the likes of defensive gurus Riley Nash (who had a decent offfensive NHL season 41 points) and Tim Schaller in terms of offensive production. Trevor Lewis has been slotted in as the 4th line centre due to eligibility alone, although he most often plays on the wing in the NHL. The last centre, Chris Wagner was selected because he could be moved between Vegas' pro and farm clubs and contribute solidly as a 4th line BFHA C next year or a great farm team #1 C for the Broncos!

On the wings, Vegas added some nice pieces in this mock. 29 NHL goal scorer Patrick Hornqvuist will be relied upon heavily on line 1 and the power play while the likes of Patrick Maroon and two wingers, Bryan Rust and Andre Burakovsky with injury shortened NHL seasons will provide most of the secondary scoring. The team also picked up four former 1st rounder NHL picks to play on the wing, Tobias Rieder, Ryan Hartman, Michael Dal Colle and Frank Vatrano, hoping that they will bloom into the potential scoring threats they were once considered.

The defence of this team may be its biggest strength. The team elected to take 8 defencemen, 7 of which are well-known for their ability to sacrifice their bodies and take out opposing players physically. The top-pair places the aging Brooks Orpik and Karl Alzner together. They may not be the fastest defencemen in the league but together they combined for over 300 hits and 400 blocks in the NHL last season, playing around 20minutes per game and 3minutes on the penalty kill. A second pairing of Jim Edmundson and Luke Schenn is very similar in terms of ability but they are significantly younger, while the 3rd pairing sports Robert Bortuzzo and the only defenceman with offensive upside, Derek Poulliot. Mark Pysyk and Patrick Nemeth were also selected and can be called-up and down inetrchangeably with Poulliot depending on the teams needs from game to game.

Last, the goalies. Two veterans and one promising youngster were taken. Marc-Andre Fleury and Corey Crawford have significnat NHL and BFHA experience and would likely find themselves splitting duties in the Knights net, unless one was moved by GM Coss. Bith goalies are proven and reliable. Anton Forsberg would automatically enter the farm system as a strong #1 and a key prospect to watch moving forward.

Here is the line breakdown for this mock draft.
